Amorrow Morgan scored 18 points to help lead Idaho State over UC-Colorado Springs 93-87 in overtime

Nov. 3, 2009

Final Stats

Pocatello, ID --- Broderick Gilchrest hit a tying three-pointer with 12.0 second left after UC-Colorado Springs missed the front end of a one-on-one, and the Bengals never trailed in the overtime period as ISU survived a scare from a hot-shooting UC-Colorado Springs squad 93-87 in overtime in front of 1,785 at Reed Gym.

Gilchrest's three came after Ben Feilmeier missed the front end of a one-and-one with 17.4 to go after going 6-for-6 to that point. Feilmeier's first two free throws came before the game even started as ISU was issued a technical foul after Gilchrest dunked during warm ups.

Once the overtime began however, ISU led throughout after Amorrow Morgan, who along with Gilchrest and Sherrod Baldwin each had 18 points, hit a driving layup 39 seconds into the period after a Gilchrest steal. Slowly ISU pulled away, as Baldwin hit a three, and Mike Lacey added a couple of baskets, including an emphatic dunk with 2:07 left to put ISU up four. A couple of Baldwin free throws with exactly a minute left put ISU up five, and the teams essentially traded points from that point on, and Baldwin eventually hit a basket at the buzzer after beating a trap to end the game at 93-87.

Overtime was the further on the minds of anyone after ISU overcame an early 10-2 deficit to outscore the Mountain Lions 41-19 over the final 17:22 of the half, taking a seemingly comfortable 43-29 advantage into halftime, as the Bengals shot a solid .593 in the opening half. The second half was a different story, as UCCS rebounded from a 9-for-25 first half performance, hitting everything in sight. They connected on their first nine shots of the second half, going on a wicked 17-0 run to take a 48-47 lead.

ISU immediately answered that run and would find themselves up six with 12:18 to go after a three-point play by Deividas Busma, who had a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, but UCCS stubbornly hung around, and retook the lead on a Jordan McClung three-pointer, one of six the Mountain Lions made in the second half without a miss.

A Mike Lacey layup with 4:10 left put ISU up 70-66, but another three, this from Scott Sublousky, cut it back to one. Cole Smith sandwiched a pair of layups around a Baldwin jumper, and with 45.0 left, Feilmeier hit two free throws to make it 75-72 UCCS. Amorrow Morgan missed a jumper, but quickly stole the ball back and then missed a three, and ISU was forced to foul with 17.4 left. At that point Feilmeier missed the one-and-one, Baldwin got the rebound and hit a streaking Gilchrest right in front of the ISU bench, and he rose, fired and connected to tie it at 75 with 12.0 left.

UCCS turned the ball over with 1.8 left, but ISU couldn't get a shot off in time, and overtime followed.

ISU had five in double-figures, as Donnie Carson added 12 points to go along with Busma, Baldwin, Morgan, and Gilchrest. ISU easily outrebounded UCCS 38-28, but the Mountain Lions outshot ISU .579 to .522 as UCCS hit 19-of-25 in the second half, and 24-of-31 if the overtime is included. The Bengals did force 18 turnovers, and Gilchrest in his first game with ISU as the starting point guard recorded seven rebounds with no turnovers.

Idaho State will host the defending NAIA national champions the Rocky Mountain Bears on Monday at 6:05 pm in Reed Gym.

NOTES: Gilchrest's three at the end was ISU's only second half three ... ISU went 7-for-10 from the line in overtime ... Smith led UCCS with 23 points ... ISU scored 18 in overtime.
