Pocatello, ID --- With the graduation of Matt Stucki, all eyes were going to be on the duo of Broderick Gilchrest and Sherrod Baldwin in regards to the point guard spot. After Thursday night's intrasquad Black/Orange scrimmage, that position looks just fine. Gilchrest scored 21 for the Black team, including 11 in a decisive 23-2 run late in the game, and Baldwin looked like a seasoned veteran scoring 25 points while playing for both squads as Black defeated Orange 68-47 in front of several hundred fans at Reed Gym. With 12 players to use, Joe O'Brien had his potential starting five of Gilchrest, Amorrow Morgan, Donnie Carson, Chron Tatum, and Deividas Busma going against Baldwin, Todd Starks, Phyllip Taylor, Rolando Little, and Mike Lacey. Some players played for both squads. The teams played two 15 minute halves. The game was a tight affair throughout, with the Black team leading by one point at the half 33-32. With 9:45 left, Mike Lacey hit a layup for the Orange team to tie the game at 42 all, but from there, the Black team took over. First, Sherrod Baldwin hit a jumper in the lane, and then after a Gilchrest steal, Amorrow Morgan hit a three-point play to push the lead to five. Gilchrest then got another steal and layup to make it 49-42 before Starks hit a basket to cut the lead back to 49-44, but from there, Black would score 16 straight. Gilchrest got a three-point play, Morgan hit a tip-in, and Baldwin then hit a three followed by a layup to make it 59-44. Gilchrest ended the run by hitting back-to-back three-pointers to make it 65-44 with 2:28 to go, and it was academic from there. Baldwin led everyone with 25 points, scoring 14 for Black and 11 for Orange. Phyllip Taylor had 23, all for Orange, on 9-of-15 shooting with three threes, and Gilchrest netted 21 for Black on 7-of-15 shooting with four assists and a pair of steals. Morgan had 15, all for Black. The Black team shot .521, and had 13 assists to just five steals. They also went 13-of-15 from the field. Combined, the entire team shot .484, and went 10-for-24 (.417) from three-point range, and 17-of-24 from the line (.708). Idaho State takes on UC-Colorado Springs in the first exhibition of the game of the preseason on Tuesday night at 8:05 pm at Reed Gym. |
