Click here to watch Wednesday's press conference with John Zamberlin
Pocatello, ID --- When John Zamberlin was hired, he mentioned in his opening press conference that Idaho State football would continue to recruit the Gem State hard and keep kids "from our own backyard". Mission accomplished. Zamberlin's inaugural recruiting class features six players who hail from Idaho, six from Zamberlin's former home state of Washington, and eight from California. Among the 20 newcomers are five junior college transfers, and three brothers of recent Bengal stars.
Leading the way among Idaho commits is Pocatello's own Mike Davenport. The Highland High School quarterback who played his home games in Holt Arena will take a two-year LDS Mission. Mike is one of three new Bengals who had brothers play at ISU, as his brother Jeff was a receiver for the Bengals in 1998 and then from 2001-03. The other two legacies are Mackay's Kelvin Krosch, the brother of former Bengal linebacker Kris Krosch (2002-05) and Scot Allen out of the San Diego area. Scot's brother was former ISU All-American and current Kansas City Chief Jared Allen (2000-03).
Zamberlin's Idaho commits reach all over the state. Along with Davenport and Krosch, the program also picked up players out of Boise (Centennial's Parker Jolly), Pingree (Snake River's Jordan Peterson), Dalton Gardens (Coeur d'Alene's Adam Chadwick), and Shelley (Shelley's highly-touted receiver Darryl Simons).
After serving as the head coach at Central Washington for the previous 10 seasons, the Washington connections for recruiting are obvious, and that led to several all-state players out of the northwest, led by linebacker J.T. Albers out of Graham, Washington. The Bengals picked up six commitments out of Washington all told.
The Bengals also kept their California connections alive and well, bringing in seven players from the Golden State, including junior college transfers Brad Rife (LB-Saddleback), Taylor Duncan (OL-Sierra), Lionel Vaiomounga (DL-Mt. San Antonio), James Francis (DB-Diablo Valley), and Mike Jablonsky (LB/DL-Fullerton).
Below are capsules for all 20 of Idaho State's signees:
