Complete Northern Arizona Results
Pocatello, ID--The Bengals fought another close match, this time against Northern Arizona on Friday afternoon. The Lumberjacks gained a victory at their first Big Sky Conference competition with a 6-1 win which improved their season record to 2-10. The Bengals fell to an overall record of 1-9 and a Big Sky record of 1-2. Idaho State nearly took the doubles point when they led 4-1 on the first and third courts. However, Senior Marc Pijoan and Sophomore Javier Royo held their lead to take the match 8-4 against Northern Arizona's Chris Arena and Bradley Bristow at the number one spot. Sophomores Jeremy Atkin and David Kutchins let their lead slip losing three straight matches. The Bengals only put down two more games before Jeffrey Morys and Ryan Fraser took the match 8-6 at the number three spot. Bengal leader Marc Pijoan gained another victory for the Bengals at the number one spot, the only singles victory of the day. "We all need to come together and play as a team," said Pijoan. He improved his singles record to 7-3 giving him a .700 percentage in the field and improved his total doubles record to 4-6 overall. Pijoan won his match in straight sets against Morys 6-3, 6-4 at the number one spot. Royo had a tough match against NAU's Arena being defeatec 6-4, 6-4 at the number two spot. He now holds a 2-8 singles record for the Bengals. Freshman Danel Barrenchea also saw the same defeat with matching scores to Royo. Barrenchea fell to Bristow 6-4, 6-4 at the number three spot. Atkin nearly came back to pull out a second set victory but fell short when he was defeated 6-0, 6-4 at the number four spot. Idaho State returns to action when they travel to Sacramento State on March 29th to play at 2 p.m. |
