Pocatello, ID--The Idaho State men's tennis team defeated Northern Colorado 5-2 Sunday morning at Reed Gym. The Bengals improved their Big Sky record to 2-5 while Northern Colorado fell to a 5-0 record. Idaho State gained all their points from singles victories. Senior Marc Pijoan gained double victories in his doubles and singles matches at his final home game of his career. "I just wanted to have fun," said Pijoan. "I am just happy about my experience here and thankful for coach." Pijoan teamed with Freshman Danel Barrenechea to defeat Paul Tschetter and Vinnie Fallico 8-6 at the number one doubles spot. He improved his doubles record with Barrenechea to 5-6 for the season. Pijoan gained his second victory in his singles match when he easily defeated Austin Nunn 6-2, 6-4 at the number one singles spot, improving his singles record to 10-5 for the season. The Bengals had extremely close matches in doubles but gained a victory only at the number one spot. At the number two and three doubles the Bengals began with a two game lead and held it until late in the set. Both teams fought hard but were overcome 9-7. Sophomores Jeremy Atkin and Javier Royo fell to Nunn and Eric Morin at the number two doubles spot. Ryan Dunn and Andrew Buzako defeated Alex Buceta and David Kutchins at the number three doubles spot. Freshman Buceta was the first Bengal off the court with a victory in singles over Morin when he overcame him 6-3, 6-2 at the number four singles spot. Barrenechea quickly followed Buceta with his victory over Paul Tschetter 6-3, 6-1 at the number three singles position, improving his singles record to 7-8 for the season. Royo also gained a victory over Vinnie Fallico when he overcame his opponent 6-2, 6-1 at the number two singles spot. Third set super ten-point tiebreakers were played at the number five and six singles spots. Atkin gained a victory at the number five singles spot. After dropping the first set 6-3, he rallied back to a 6-2 second set then took the tiebreaker 10-5. Kutchins had an excellent match winning his first set in his Bengal career against Buzako. The Bengal fell in the first set 6-4 but prevailed in the second when he took the set 7-5. Kutchins had an exciting third set tiebreaker and led the score at 9-8 in the final moments of the game, but was overcome by Buzako 12-10. The Bengals will return to action for their last match of the season on Thursday, April 17th at 1:00pm against Weber State in Ogden, Utah. |
