Las Vegas, NV--Idaho State men's tennis participated in the 2007 ITA Mountain Regional tournament at the Darling Memorial Tennis Center in Las Vegas. Three Bengals played in the tournament including two new members of the ISU team sophomore, Javier Royo and freshman, Danel Barrenetxea. In the first round Marc Pijoan competed against Boise State's Paul Koenke who was ranked 26th in the tournament. After failing to convert two match points Pijoan fell to Koenke 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. Pijoan. Pijoan then scored a win in the first round of the consolation bracket against Andrew Dobb of the University of Idaho 6-2, 6-3. In the second round of the consolation bracket Pijoan knocked out ISU's freshman, Danel Barrenetxea 6-3, 7-6. Pijoan continues in the tournament to defeat Tyler Clonts of Brigham Young 6-4, 6-3. In a three-hour match Pijoan was finally overcome by New Mexico's Kamil Pajowski who was ranked 29th in the tournament. Sophomore, Javier Royo lost his first round match against Bradley Bristow of Northern Arizona 5-7, 6-3, 7-6. In the first round of the consolation bracket Royo defeated Greg Ferry of Air Force 6-1, 6-4. In the second round of consolation Royo beat Montana State's Esteban Ferrero 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Royo was finally defeated by Nick Plum of Webert State 6-3, 6-2. Freshman, Danel Barrenetxea beat Jeff Cero of Portland State University in the first round of the tournament 6-7, 6-1, 6-2. In the second round of the tournament Sascha Kiehne of Weber State who was ranked 25th in the tournament defeated Barrenetxea 6-4, 6-3. Teammate Pijoan defeated Barrenetxea in the second round of the consolation to knock him out of the tournament. Barrenetxea and Royo also competed in doubles and were defeated in the first round of the tournament by Art Karas and Nico Riego de Dios of Eastern Washington 8-3. Barrenetxea and Royo were defeated in the first round of the consolation bracket to Northern Arizona's Chris Arena and Bradley Bristow due to a no show. Luke Shields of Boise State University won the tournament by defeating Clancy Shields of Boise State University due to injury, 6-3 Ret. (inj). Adam Holmstrom and Nik Persson of the University of Denver who were number one in doubles took first place by defeating Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski of the University of New Mexico, who were ranked number 3 in the tournament 8-3. |
