Bengal Track and Field Battles Through Weather

Missoula, MT -- The Idaho State track and field team had a wet beginning to their 2006 outdoor season fighting rain and hail at the Al Manuel Meet hosted by the University of Montana Saturday, April 1. The men won two of the three team duals, while the women lost all three duals.

On the men's side, the Bengals went fifth, sixth, and seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with Nathan Capps, Dmitry Beresnev, and Brad Silvester; the trio ran times of 15.70, 15.75, and 16.06, respectively. In the 100-meter dash, ISU's top runner was Ryan Dick placing ninth with a time of 11.24. Matt Brown placed third in the 400-meter dash clocking a time of 49.10 while also placing ninth with a time of 22.53 in the 200-meter dash to finish the event as the top Bengal. Rounding out the Bengal men sprinters was Jon DelBosque who finished second in the 400-meter hurdles running a time of 55.27.

In the middle distance and distance events, the Bengals were led by Saheed Khan who won both the 800-meter run and the 1,600-meter run clocking times of 1:54.38 and 4:03.40. Kol Henrikson placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.27, while Keane Shuler took third in the 1,600-meter run clocking a 4:08.46. Shuler also placed second in the 5,000-meter run and Landen Teeter fifth running times of 15:03.19 and 16:25.87, respectively.

In the jumping events, Ben Layman won the long jump with a mark of 22-6.25 and took second in the high jump clearing 6-10.75. Peter Komendant took third in the long jump with a leap of 22-3 and tied for seventh in the high jump clearing 6-0.50. Levi Keller took third in the high jump clearing 6-6.25 and eighth in the long jump after jumping 21-1.50. Josh Boehler took seventh and Jason Webb eighth in the men's triple jump with marks of 43-8.50 and 41-10.75, respectively.

John Danielson took third in the hammer throw with a mark of 174-2. Jake Briles and Logan Harding finished just behind in fourth and fifth places with marks of 162-10 and 154-8. Nathan Capps was the top Bengal in the javelin placing 11th after throwing 164-2. Danielson also won the shot put with a throw of 57-3.75 with teammate Zeb Sion in second with a mark of 56-3.25.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team took fourth with a time of 43.48. The men's discus, pole vault, and 4x400-meter relay were excluded from competiton due to the weather.

On the women's side, Christina Brown finished as the top Bengal in the 100-meter dash clocking a time of 12.84. Cassie Merkley took third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.94 while Erin Bell took fifth with a time of 15.14. Trinelle McKinley was the top Bengal in the 200-meter dash taking ninth place with a time of 26.11. McKinley ran an excellent 400-meter dash to place second in the event with a time of 57.85 while Tahnea Murphy took seventh in a time of 1:02.71. Mandi Janowitz and Carrie North took fourth and seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with times of 1:05.19 and 1:07.16, respectively.

Sarah Skeem led the middle and long distance women placing first in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:44.20 and seventh in the 800-meter run clocking a 2:22.83. Jessica Bobert took eighth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:22.97, just behind Skeem. Shannalee Christman ran to a fifth place finish in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:14.42.

In the jumps, Cassie Merkly took fourth in the high jump clearing 5-2.50. Katie Williams took third while Kasie Scott sixth, in the pole vault both clearing 11-2.50. Christina Brown won the long jump with a mark of 17-9.75.

Cassie Merkley placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of 134-1. Sharen Contreras was the top Bengal in both the shot put and hammer throw. She placed ninth in the shot put with a mark of 39-2.25 and 16th in the hammer with a toss of 133-2.

The ISU 4x100-meter relay team took fifth with a time of 49.56. The women did not compete in the triple jump, discus, and 4x400-meter relays due to the weather.
