Janssen is beginning his 19th year as assistant track coach at Idaho State University and just completed his 15th as head men's and women's cross country coach. Janssen has coached numerous athletes to ISU track records, prepared them for competition at the NCAA Track and Field Championships and seen them honored as All-Americans. Janssen oversees the distance corps and sprinters for the ISU track and field team. He began his collegiate athletic career as a swimmer at Western State (Colo.) and joined the track team upon the head track coach's request, before becoming a graduate assistant coach. In 1980, he was named head track coach at Metro State College. Janssen's teams finished in the NAIA's top 20 three times. In 1984, Janssen moved to the University of Kansas as a graduate assistant. He then joined the ISU coaching staff in 1985. Janssen was one of the originators of the First Security Games, Idaho's state games, which first took place in 1988. Personally, he has two National Master's running titles to his credit, as well as two runner-up finishes. Janssen and his wife, Elizabeth, have been married for 27 years and have two daughters, 19-year old Nicole and 15-year old Kyle, and one son, 12-year old Derek. |
