Pocatello, Idaho - More than 40 people turned out for the 23rd annual Alumni Meet at ISU's Centennial Course Saturday. The Idaho State women were able to defeat their alumni counterparts despite Lois Ricardi-Keller's first-place finish while the Bengal men were defeated by the male alumni. Keller and Branden Teeter turned in the fastest times for the women and men respectively, but by using Head Coach Brian Janssen's formula which takes into consideration both age and performance, it was actually Rod Hansen who took the men's title this year, defeating Janssen by just three seconds. "Hansen ran in the very first Alumni Meet 23 years ago," Janssen said, "before many of these kids were even born." Hansen, 47, is a doctor at Weber State University and teaches in the Department of Health Promotion and Human Performance. He ran for the Bengals from 1982-84 and 1986. He holds an all-time top 10 position in the indoor 3000 meter with at time of 8:23.56 as well as the outdoor 5000m (14:40.24). Other notable alumni in attendance included Jeff Jaynes (1985-88) who was one of the most decorated runners in ISU history with seven conference titles. He was also an All-American in 1985, 1986 and 1988. Darrin Jernigan (1986-87), an instructor in the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Idaho State also competed Saturday. Jernigan was the first athlete that Janssen coached to a conference title in an individual event. The Bengals will prepare this week for the Big Sky Conference Championship Saturday, Oct. 31 in Greeley, Colo. |
