Pocatello, ID---The Montana State men's cross country team scored a major upset, while it was business as usual for the Northern Arizona women's squad as the two teams won their respective championships at the Big Sky Cross Country Championships at the ISU Centennial Cross Country Course Saturday morning.
Montana State, the 22nd ranked team in the nation on the men's side, came in heavy underdogs to the fourth ranked Lumberjacks, but thanks to Casey Jermyn's individual win and placing five runners in the top 15, the Bobcats edged the Lumberjacks, 41 to 45 to take the title. Weber State finished third with 51 points, Montana took fourth with 108, Idaho State was fifth with 138, Portland State took sixth with 157, Eastern Washington was seventh with 181 points and Sacramento State took eighth with 203.
Individually Jermyn, who took fifth in last year's race, pulled away late to win by a comfortable margin in the men's race. Jermyn finished with a time of 24:53.6, ahead of Northern Arizona's Travis Laird, who took second in 25:12.4. Antony Ford of Montana finished third in 25:23.
For Idaho State Paul Hoffman led the way, taking 17th place overall in 26:26.7. Joe Perdue took 23rd in 27:02.8, Trevor Knight was 28th in 27:14.1, Matt Tyrrell finished 32nd in 27:35.4, Aaron Olswanger took 38th in 28:04.2, Kol Henrikson was 45th in 28:44.8 and Nick Bradley finished 46th in 28:54.0.
On the women's side the seventh ranked Lumberjacks had four of the top five to roll to the team title with 18 points. Weber State took second place with 49 points, Montana State was third with 92, Montana took fourth with 96, Portland State was fifth with 134, Eastern Washington 183, Idaho State was seventh with 185 and Sacramento State finished eighth with 197.
Individually sisters Ida and Johanna Nilsson took first and second for Northern Arizona in times of 18:16.1 and 18:30.6, respectively. Erika Edwards finished third in 18:58.3. Jessica Winters of Weber State was the first non-NAU runner to finish with a time of 19:05.0.
For Idaho State Tara Summers took 26th place in 20:18.7, Malorie Sunderland was 30th in 20:38.1, Donilyn Rowland finished 33rd in 20:43.3, Brooke Benedetti took 45th in 21:26.1, Ashley Tucker was 51st in 22:09.9 and Lisa Podnay finished 54th in 23:31.0.
