In November 2008, Janssen completed his 19th season as head men's and women's cross country coach and is looking ahead to his 24td season as as track coach at Idaho State University. Janssen is solely in charge of the Bengal distance squad from cross country through track and field. He has coached many different track and field events, but is now focusing on the distance and middle distance squads. Janssen earned his first Big Sky Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year award during the 2004 season. He coached the 2005 team to a men's third place finish and a women's sixth place finish, including two All-Conference finishers, Matt Nelson and Saheed Khan. Janssen coached Paul Hoffman to a stellar career finish when Hoffman qualified for his first NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2005. Janssen's 22-year career has been full of accolades and accomplishments. He has coached athletes to numerous track records, prepared them for competition at the NCAA Track and Field Championships and has seen them honored as All-Americans. Janssen has coached seven All-Americans and has seen 13 of his athletes ranked in the top-10 nationally. Janssen has coached 66 conference champions and has had 244 of his athletes make All-Conference. Janssen began his collegiate athletic career as a swimmer at Western State (Colo.) and joined the track team upon the head coach's request, before becoming a graduate assistant coach. In 1980, he was named head track coach at Metro State College. Janssen's teams finished in the NAIA's top-20 three times. In 1984, Janssen moved to the University of Kansas as a graduate assistant. He then joined the ISU coaching staff in 1985. He was one of the originators of the First Security Games, Idaho's state games, which first took place in 1988. Janssen has two National Master's running titles to his credit, as well as two runner-up finishes. Janssen and his wife, Elizabeth, have been married for 34 years and have two daughters, 27-year old Nicole and 22-year old Kyle, and one son, 19-year old Derek. |
